 I think that this may have been cited originally for the media modal,
 actually. However, I don't think the issue here is a perception of slow -
 it's a perception of broken, because there's no "no items found" message
 or anything like that.

 Anyway, sounds like we need a different approach, so punting from 3.7.
 Please feel free to turn that pseudo-code into real code and a patch :)
