 Per the [http://make.wordpress.org/core/handbook/inline-documentation-
 standards/php-documentation-standards/ inline documentation standards]
 we're sticking with using `@var` in this context for the time being.
 However, if there missing access modifiers, patches are welcome to include
 them.
