 Maybe I interpret that 3 year old poll differently, but the "Maybe, but
 I'd want a setting to turn it on or off." response seems to me to
 basically mean "I don't care", and in that case, there's really only 34%
 of all users who actually care about and want this feature. So it seems
 pretty far from the 80/20 case, and more in plugin territory from what I
 can tell.

 It's been long enough though that I'd be curious to see this poll run
 again.

 On the other hand, as long as we're pushing for automatic updates, these
 ultimately shouldn't ever be sent out regularly. However, that also means
 that if an automatic update *can't* update for any reason, there
 definitely should be an email notification about it.

 In any case, this ticket (and poll) should probably be re-aligned to
 actually discuss email notifications on automatic update notifications
 (for both success and failure).
