Comment (by creativeinfusion):

 For a sub directory install PATH_CURRENT_SITE will be set as you noted,
 but for a sub directory install where WordPress is given its own directory
 and the site operates from document root, PATH_CURRENT_SITE is not set.

 PATH_CURRENT_SITE is equivilent to the path component of home_url on a
 single site install.
