In HTML5 the `<cite>` element shouldn't be used, when referring to a
name/author.

The Release Candidate proposes the `<b>` [http://www.w3.org/TR/html5/text-
level-semantics.html#the-b-element element], which sounds fair enough.
obenland mentioned, that it would also set itself apart from the
sorrounding `<span>`.
