 TO-DO:

 * Ensure no regressions in alternative modern browsers (so, IE10, Opera,
 Safari).
 * Make sure it's working reasonably well in IE8 and IE9.
 * Look at IE7. If the pixel alignment didn't help and it can't be
 salvaged, kill tooltips (and maybe tick marks) for IE7.
