 I always have something different in my mind with that function. That
 function should just work. I just tried regenerate thumbnails and it does
 work for me.

 Can you do a var_dump on that specific image of $sizes inside
 wp_generate_attachment_metadata(); It seems that something goes wrong with
 that. Maybe a plugin that uses the filter
 'intermediate_image_sizes_advanced'.
