 As an update, I have tested out this patch and it works as expected. Here
 is my code as a proof of concept for both rendering the custom field
 template and saving the data: https://gist.github.com/f3d93e78ed118b283938

 It would be great if the patch could be committed to 3.5.1 so that I can
 actively start using the new media manager in both my plugins and client
 work. ;-)
