 I'm writing plugins for clients to distribute on wordpress.org. So no, I
 don't have other solutions.

 symlinking desires, I don't think it's a very common one...

 Is it really that hard to make the virtual plugin filename available to
 the plugin on activation and uninstall?  Hell, I'll settle for that.  New
 patch coming...
