 I've been working with trunk the past couple of weeks and have been
 gathering my thoughts as well as thoughts from my wife and two local
 clients. Here is the combined info:

 * The icons are too large for the space. Either the icons should get
 smaller or the padding around the menu items should increase. It just
 looks disproportionate.
 * The hover state is super tough to see on screens that don't have a high
 resolution. It almost blends into the background, which can easily cause
 confusion for users who have never used WordPress before and aren't
 familiar with what the icons represent yet.
 * The icon design does not match the font of the admin. The icons lack the
 sophistication that the new buttons and slender fonts represent, so while
 the icons might fit with another font, they certainly are not visually
 appealing with the current feel of Helvetica Neue.
