 Another obvious alternative mentioned just above me is to combine the icon
 font with keeping plugin authors ability to bundle PNGs intact. Here's a
 sort of half-assed version of how that could look based on Mel's mockup:

 good.

 On Mels mockup, while I think it's very lovely, I think that icons in
 general should be a bit smaller, and if we combine that with a trimming of
 the padding, there's no reason the menu should be larger than the current
 one.
