 I'm sorry, you're right, that came across as more inflammatory than I
 meant. I was trying to paint a picture of the kind of mentality that
 estabslishes the basis for resisting changes like this that feel, for
 whatever reasons, like half-solutions.

 You make a pretty good case for the utility of being able to specify the
 serialization method. Perhaps that is the right way to frame this patch,
 than it's not a stop-gap API solution but an affordance for allowing
 clients to communicate with the canonical WordPress API using alternate
 serializations.
