 I have not tested in a non OS X environment, but removing the `vertical-
 alignment` completely helps, though it doesn't completely fix it. I
 believe the problem is the height differences between `input` checkboxes
 and `select` drop-downs, namely that the `select`s are set to `28px` and
 checkboxes have none explicitly set.

 This forces the labels to wrap around a `28px` tall select, consequently
 distorting the wrapper label in a way that `input`s do not.
