 With comment spam being so ruthless, it seems pointless to show the total
 number of comments in the database rather than just approved.

 I have Tens of thousands of comments according to the dashboard, but only
 a handful are legit.

 In the "At a glance" metabox, the posts and pages only show the Approved
 count, so it'd make sense to show how many approved comments there are
 here too.
