 Thanks for the clarification.  #19581 is requesting a filter for the
 wp_list_comments args which would allow you to pass in additional WP_Query
 parameters.  I'm going to change the resolution on this to duplicate since
 19581 has a patch.  +1 on the need to use WP_Query parameters.
