Comment:

 [3992] - It's there as extra protection in the event that a null slips
 through due to a PHP bug or charset edgecase (the latter being more
 likely)

 As it's causing no harm, nor is it within code which is called a
 significant amount of times per page, lets not change it for the sake of
 changing it.
