 If we're running heartbeat for other reasons anyway (like updating post
 locks), then it makes sense to additionally check the login and offer an
 easy re-login as well, since it's very little additional effort, resource-
 wise, and is still a better experience than a hard redirection and loss of
 place in the panel.

 Are you arguing we shouldn't use a login popup at all, or just under
 circumstances where heartbeat wouldn't otherwise be running?
