 Sorry, I just discovered that it only happens when you leave the title
 out.  So:

 - Add new post
 - Select image post format
 - Click "Select/Upload image"
 - Select an image
 - Publish
 - Go to edit.php
 - Click "Trash" link

 Success message shows, but the post remains in the published queue.
