Comment (by studiograsshopper):

 This seems to me to be a lot of hoops to jump through to deal with
 something which shouldn't be dealt with by PHP/HTML in the first place.
 Why not ditch $content_width altogether and let CSS do the work?
 (Or am I missing something obvious?)
