 Without something like this implemented, does adding theme support for
 post-formats currently really do anything, other than just registering
 globally that the theme supports them? -- Meaning does registering that
 your theme supports post formats have any kind of tangible effect on the
 site?

 This is something I've found kind of confusing with
 `post_formats_compat()` and Post Formats UI all being enabled by default.
