Comment:

 This was previously discussed extensively on Trac (#21440, #21489, #21955)
 and IRC ([https://irclogs.wordpress.org/chanlog.php?channel=wordpress-
 dev&day=2012-09-28&sort=asc#m467590 today]), so this is really not a huge
 oversight.

 And as @lancewillett pointed out in
 [http://make.wordpress.org/themes/2012/09/18/default-themes-change-each-
 year/ Why Default Themes Change Each Year]:
  "[...] the default theme isn’t trying to be an end-all-be-all theme. It
 won’t please everyone."
