Comment:

 It's my belief that the "default" theme is supposed to act as a showcase
 of !WordPress' features, including the template hierarchy. However, now
 that I've thought about it a bit more, it seems to me that if the theme
 isn't bundled with custom post types, there shouldn't be an exception for
 one in archive.php. And if there isn't any kind of drastic difference
 between the types of archives, it makes plenty of sense to leave it
 condensed into archive.php

 In short, I agree with this sentiment and what @lancewillett said before
 about cognitive overload. You can always break them apart in a child
 theme.
