 While this is being worked out, don, I would do an SQL copy.

 Export your DB, search/replace the domain name (if needed), import that,
 then FTP up your images.

 I have seen this before, where images/content gets duplicated because the
 importer doesn't check 'Oh, I have this post/media' already.
