Comment:

 Just to confirm that I exported the wp_options table, dropped it,
 recreated it with default charset=utf8 and reimported the contents. The
 problem went away.
 I'm going to leave this as reopened since I want to check if latin1 is an
 acceptable encoding and should therefore be catered for in the SimplePie
 code.
