 Now that the, erm, "attachment" of attachments to posts is being "de-
 emphasised" we will likely have many more attachments with no parent post.

 Which post status exactly is being inherited by such attachments?  And
 should the post status of the parent also affect which attachments are
 returned by queries such as the one you describe?
