 Thanks nacin, apart from the performance issues, WP desperately needs a
 proper tree view to organize menus for pages. I'm using a plug-in that
 does the job in the mean time. Let's hope the up-coming WP 3.5 sorts that
 one out.

 ronnieg, I saw your comment above, and in fact I have installed the
 plugins you recommended, and now it is just fine. Because I cut my main
 menu down considerably, it now works with no problems. And like you, I now
 have menus displaying on sub-pages in my hierarchical structure, so I have
 menus on three levels now. Thanks for the tip!

 My main concern now is that I'm creating a few dozen sub-menus, so I
 wonder what issues I will come across later as the site fills out?
