 See my workarounds as posted in my reply on this thread 8 months ago,
 about 20 up from here. My real estate site (converted from Joomla) is now
 over 750 pages and growing, and with the combination of plugins and
 workarounds I described earlier, no more menu maintenance or performance
 problems whatsoever on WP 3.3. I think the real issue lots of folks may be
 having is trying to put too many pages into one massive menu structure.
 That's why I use multiple small sidebar sub-menus controlled by the widget
 logic plugin, and only display a couple of them on any one page. My users
 love the ease of navigation this provides. It is not at all confusing to
 them because the sidebar sub-menus are always appropriate to the specific
 page they are displayed on, and they are not presented with too many
 choices. I think the SEs also like this because it keeps the number of
 hyperlinks on any one page to a reasonable number.
