 Attached a [attachment:6821.reabstract.diff​ patch] that re-adds the
 abstract methods, and includes a number of PHPDoc additions and fixes.

 The consensus (per markoheijnen, kurtpayne, nacin, and I) was that we are
 not enforcing enough structure in the current code.
 We can always move back to the way the code is currently (without abstract
 methods), but will not have a chance to enforce the structure if we don't
 do so now.

 [attachment:6821.reabstract.diff​  The patch] includes the PHPDoc fixes
 previously submitted under [attachment:6821.docs.src_abs.diff
 6821.docs.src_abs.diff​​].
