 I switched my site's viewport to device-width, so I have an idea of what's
 going on with the "3x" issue.

 I'm satisfied that the devicePixelRatio and the zoom level are still two
 separate issues.  In other words, loading 2x Gravatars doesn't hurt
 anything.  Whether or not to reload images during zooms would be a design
 decision.
