 Adding my vote to moving the code to a plugin. As someone who authors a
 plugin based on links (Link Library) that has a fair amount of users, I
 think that it makes sense to keep a "standard" data structure for links
 and functions to access that data. With no guidance, many link-related
 plugins would end up creating their own CPTs and that would quickly become
 a mess.
