Agree with Jane. Perhaps some of the confusion comes from the fact that we
save the "caption" entered in the image properties popup into the
attachment post's excerpt (and the image description is saved in
post_content). Then the excerpt is shown in the default gallery and on
individual image (attachment) pages, and is inserted together with the
image in new posts/pages.
Perhaps we should rename the caption field in the image properties popup
to "Default Caption" (as it is used as default in new posts).
