 -1, I agree with nacin. I personally think this is firmly plugin
 territory.

 The examples you noted are social networks, so they have their own
 avatars, whereas most other sites don't. See GitHub (which is basically a
 social network), StackOverflow (ditto), etc. (Note that these are
 technology-focussed sites, so that's slightly biased.)
