 Possible.  I followed the instructions at
 http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

 I added a new dir with a copy of the style.css only, changed the theme
 name, gave it a different background image URL, and added the Template
 header pointing to the parent theme dir.  Everything appears to work as
 expected but the Customizer.
