Comment:

 Rather thorough attempt that emerged from the WordCamp San Francisco Hack
 Day. Handles subdir and subdomain multisite installs.

 To test, install WP in single site mode in a subdirectory. Move the Site
 URL ('home') to the root. Set up the Network. Boom.
