 I was busy with creating something on github
 (https://github.com/markoheijnen/WP_Image). Hopefully I can get something
 working in the next 24 hours. When I'm fine with a first version I will
 post it here.

 I do also work on a WP_Image class since I do believe it's value. Even if
 it is in the begin a simple layer for using an attachment ID instead of
 the file path. Since we will toughing a lot of the image generating code I
 also hope we can get something working that you can do add_image_size with
 an extra argument if it should be auto generated.

 I was thinking if we also should add a way to create @2x images. Since I
 believe there isn't a good way at this moment to do so if you want to add
 @2x to the filename.
