Comment:

 Any chance this could make it into 3.4 beta 3? The changes are
 programmatically very minor and well tested (I've been using this tweak on
 dozens of production sites for months), but the usability improvements are
 substantial.

 If needed, I can submit an updated patch based on the latest 3.4 trunk.
