Comment:

 I am re-opening this as the unit tests from tellyworth continue to fail.
 As he said above: "I don't think this patch does any harm, but I'm not
 convinced that it reliably fixes the bug."

 We should come to a conclusion on the scope of this ticket and whether the
 tests are valid.
