 Since we're rushing the pointer in right before freeze and didn't do it as
 a widespread plugin first, I'd like to make it core only for v1 and add
 more extensibility in 3.4. That way if once it's in the wild we realize we
 should have done it differently, we can fix it without having to worry
 about breaking plugins. In general I think we should be doing this (or
 starting more features as plugins), because we are backed into corners
 with a number of features that are being used by plugins/themes that makes
 it less appealing to improve them bc of backwards compat (widgets, menus,
 etc).
