Comment:

 The post suggests two possible use cases for rel="canonical" HTTP headers:

 * Offering a white paper both as an HTML page and as a downloadable PDF
 alternative.
 * A website serves the same file from multiple URLs (e.g. when using a
 content distribution network).

 Currently they don't seem to be relevant for most of !WordPress users.
