Comment (by garyc40):

 Pagination in post / comment lists are revamped in WP 3.1 . So the problem
 of spam count being added up doesn't exist.

 However, in 3.1 (specifically current trunk), deleting, approving,
 unapproving comments don't update the "XXX items" count properly. This
 problem is fixed as a part of my patch in #6530.
