 I have a number of blogs running on a server with WHM and Pure-FTPd which
 seems to to be type most affected. Automatic updates hadn't worked since
 upgrading to version 3.0.

 I have now tested the suggested changes.

 In order to update from 3.0.4 to 3.0.5 I changed just two files, wp-
 admin/includes/file.php and wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-
 ftpext.php according to
 [http://core.trac.wordpress.org/attachment/ticket/10913/10913.diff
 10913.diff], uploaded them and the automatic update ran smoothly and
 quickly (sub-30 seconds).
