 wp_title_tag() looks like the best approach.

 Easier to switch to and avoids the inherent problems with wp_title().

 The only drawback is that you can't automatically detect wether a theme is
 using wp_title() or wp_title_tag(). We could add a theme support flag for
 that later, though.
