 Gotcha, thanks for the explanation!  Essentially, what I'd been noticing
 was that WP wasn't "remembering" my choice between image inserting
 "sessions" (i.e. new post -> insert image, insert image [remembers];
 another new post -> insert image [forgets last choice] )

 However, I'm now (of course) not able to reproduce it again, so it's
 possible it was a one-time quirk.   If I can find a way to regularly
 reproduce it again, I'll post here.
