 That was just an example. I'm sure with a little creative thinking one can
 come up with many examples of where the slug might be used. Given that
 there's a template tag for nearly every other commonly-used data point, I
 think it's reasonable to request the_slug().

 Also, from the point of view of improving the new developer experience,
 it's also the most logical starting point for someone to try, once they've
 learned about the_title(), the_content() and the_excerpt(). Why not
 the_slug()?
