Comment:

 Ryan and I chatted about this in IRC the other day, and I think we both
 came to the conclusion that this is something that is best left to plugins
 for now.  That's because it's something that is not necessarily in the
 interests of the vast majority of WP users.

 However, we should make it easier for plugins to implement such a system
 without forcing the user to make theme edits.

 I would like to do the following:
  * Add filter(s) to `wp_list_comments` to make this doable by a plugin
  * Write a proof-of-concept plugin that uses that filter to provide this
 functionality for those who want it.
