Comment:

 Since any modifications to show_admin_bar need to be made before the init
 action fires, we're a bit limited in what we can do to decide whether the
 admin bar should be on or off.

 I'd like to be able to check the current user before deciding whether to
 show the bar; would it be worth reinstating the filter, and then setting
 show_admin_bar with whatever the filter returns?
