 From Twitter, it looks like the answer to my above question is: Don't use
 add_theme_support on a non-standard, non-portable, (pre-standard?) Format.

 For a non-standard post format, Use a plugin (or custom theme functions)
 to style up a taxonomy (category) and if it gets popular, it might make
 the list. (Much of the suggested post format extensions seem better as
 CPTs anyway).

 Non-extensibility protects the standard list from being ignored/obsolete,
 and protects the *Feature* (in it's entirety) as a Fully portable standard
 (pragmatic I guess).

 I still see Justin's (and other's) point that a non-standard format
 wouldn't effect the portability of the standard formats, and that an
 extension API would be cleaner for yet to emerge standards. (Formatting
 Categories is still possible, if less clean.)

 But over all, even without the extendability, it's a really cool feature.
