works, but do we really want to to introduce this amount of backtracking?
array could just as well use:

preg_match( '/^a:[0-9]+:/', $data );
}}}
object could just as well use:
{{{
preg_match(
'/^O:[0-9]+:"[a-zA-Z_\x7f-\xff][a-zA-Z0-9_\x7f-\xff]*":[0-9]+:', $data );
}}}
and the string case could use something like:
{{{
substr($data, -2, 2) == '";' && preg_match( '/^s:[0-9]+:"/', $data );
}}}
