 I agree. After testing the patch, it seems like the most lightweight
 option we have. Removing the trash handlers reduces numerous odd behaviors
 into one bug—if you give a menu an object, it will show it regardless of
 the object's status. This is much easier to understand from a user's
 perspective and is likely the best possible interim solution.
