 Hmm,

 So it looks like this may not be a bug after all. There was recently a
 question on wpQuestions that helped me understand what was going on on my
 installation. http://wpquestions.com/question/show/id/678

 Apparently, if you have registered the custom taxonomy "type". It does
 strange things in Media Upload Land.
